Traditional Greek dishes that are essential to try on your travels!!

During a holiday, tasting the typical dishes of Greece and traditions of the island is something really not to relinquish.
At mid-day, and in particular, at dinner, the thousands of smells invading the streets will drive you to one of the many taverns to find a Mediterranean cuisine where meat, fish, olive oil and vegetables are fundamental and will always surprise you for the authenticity of their tastes. 
The local products such as honey, olive oil, cheese, goat yoghurt and dishes of the island are very important and worth of tasting at least once.

Starters (Orektika)
Traditional sauces to spread on bread:
Melitzanosalata - Consists of Aubergine. 
Taramasolata - Fish eggs, bread crumb or mashed potato, and lemon juice or vinegar and a splash of olive oil. 
Tzatziki) - yoghurt, cucumber and garlic.

Tyropitakia - Puff Pastry filled with Feta, the Greek national cheese.
Greek salad (Horiatiki) - feta and olive oil to give it that great Greek taste (can also have as a main if you want a light meal. 

Mains (kýrios)
Meze - The ideal way to share a traditional meal with your friends and family. A tasty selection of hot and cold starters, followed by a variety of main courses.

Meat (kréas)
Kebab (Souvlaki).
Lamb Chops (Paithakia).
(Hirini Brisola) - Pork Chops seasoned with oregano. 
Haloumi - Chunks of Cypriot cheese cooked with a medley of vegetables.

Fish (Psari)
Calamari - Lightly floured tender squid. 
xifias - Charcoal-grilled swordfish steak. 
Garithes - Charcoal-grilled king prawn with lemon, garlic & butter sauce. 

Desserts (epidórpio)
Frozen Greek Yoghurt - Cold, smooth and refreshing, with minted honey is the perfect dessert for a warm summer evening in Greece. 
Svinghi - Little Greek doughnuts.
Greek Baklava - Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup made from sugar and/or honey. 
Koulourakia - Butter or olive-oil cookies, typically baked during Easter.
